Is My Cracked Carbon Frame Repairable?
We get some version of this question almost every day: someone finds a crack, a dent, or a soft spot on their carbon frame and wants to know if it's game over. Most of the time, the honest answer is no — it isn't. Carbon composite is a repairable material when the damage is handled as a structural problem rather than patched over, and the large majority of frames that come through our shop leave in rideable, guaranteed condition.
What's almost always repairable
Localized impact damage is the most common thing we see, and it's the most straightforward to fix. That includes cracks from a crash, a dent or gouge from a rock strike, a crushed chainstay from a dropped chain, or a cracked bottom bracket shell from a hard pedal strike. Even damage that looks alarming — a visible hole, exposed fiber, a crack you can see daylight through — is usually confined to one area of one tube. We remove the compromised laminate down to sound material and rebuild it, so the size of the visible damage matters less than how contained it is.
Delamination — where layers of the laminate have separated, often audible as a dull or hollow sound when you tap the area — is also very repairable, and catching it early actually makes for an easier fix than waiting until it's spread or a crack has broken through the surface.
What's borderline
Damage that spans multiple tubes, or that sits at a major junction where several tubes meet — the head tube, the bottom bracket shell, the seat tube junction — takes more work because those areas carry load from several directions at once. These are repairable more often than not, but they deserve a hands-on look rather than a photo-only quote, because what looks like a single crack at a junction sometimes continues further into the tube than it appears from outside.
What usually isn't worth repairing
The frames we turn away are rare, but they exist. If the frame's geometry itself has been bent — not just a cracked laminate but an actual change in tube alignment, which can happen in a severe crash — no amount of laminate work fixes that; the frame's dimensions are wrong and no repair addresses geometry. Extremely widespread damage across many tubes, where a rebuild would essentially mean re-building most of the frame, can also cross the line where repair costs more than the frame is worth, though we'll always tell you honestly if that's the case rather than take work we don't think makes sense for you.
How to check your own frame first
- Look closely under good light, including the underside of tubes where impact damage often lands but isn't visible from a normal riding position.
- Tap gently along the tube with a coin or your knuckle, listening for a dull or hollow sound compared to the rest of the frame — that's a sign of possible delamination.
- Check for paint that's cracked or bulged even where the carbon underneath looks intact — paint often cracks before the laminate does, and it's an early warning sign.
- Don't ride a frame you suspect is cracked to try to confirm it — a hairline crack can propagate quickly under load.
