Fifty years of composites, one small shop in Walworth.

Richard Palmer started working with composite materials in 1972, long before carbon fiber ever touched a bicycle. The progression tells the story on its own: fiberglass racing dinghies, then foam-cored Olympic-class catamarans, then ocean racing yachts skinned in carbon fiber over honeycomb cores — the kind of work where a laminate schedule has to be right the first time because there's no margin for a part that looks fine but isn't. From there his career pushed composite development forward across infrastructure, wind energy, aerospace, and automotive projects, where fiber orientation, resin systems, and mold pressure all had to be understood, not guessed at.

By the time carbon fiber became the default material for high-end bicycle frames, Richard had already spent over three decades thinking about how composite laminates fail and how to rebuild them so they don't fail again. In 2013 he opened The Carbon Doctor in Walworth, Wisconsin, to put that background to work for cyclists whose frames had cracked, crushed, or delaminated — the kind of damage that used to mean an expensive frame went in the trash.

The shop's approach is built on one idea borrowed straight from aerospace repair: a structural fix has to restore the original engineering, not just hide the damage. That means fully removing the compromised laminate rather than patching over it, rebuilding it ply by ply with fiber oriented the way the frame's designer intended, and curing it under even, external pressure in a silicone mold rather than the uneven squeeze of a vacuum bag. It's slower than a cosmetic patch job, and it's the reason a Carbon Doctor repair is guaranteed rather than hoped-for.

Since 2013, more than 2,000 frames have come through the shop for repair — road frames, mountain frames, time trial bikes, the occasional triathlon frame with more curves than a river — and none of them have come back with a structural failure. That number matters more to us than any marketing line: it's the actual track record of the fluid compression molding process, applied one frame at a time.
